Community Accessibility Map

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Accessible Canada Act have made major gains in enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities. The purpose of this research is to suggest a checklist-based strategy for surveying buildings in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to increase awareness and comprehension of available facilities.

To conduct a systematic evaluation of buildings & accessibility in Sault Ste. Marie, a comprehensive checklist is proposed. This checklist encompasses key areas of consideration, such as entrances, ramps, parking spaces, elevators, washrooms, and signage.

A colour-coded system has been developed to raise public awareness and make it simpler to identify accessible facilities. This approach allocates distinct colours to various accessibility elements found in buildings, allowing people to readily determine the amount of accessibility provided.

The public may clearly determine the availability of critical facilities such as ramps, lifts, accessible washrooms and parking spaces by using color-coded indicators. This research investigates the implementation process, possible advantages, problems, and recommendations for using this system successfully to build a more inclusive society.

Ontario is taking considerable strides towards building an environment that celebrates diversity and offers equal opportunities for all persons, regardless of their ability, through encouraging accessibility and boosting public awareness.
